Brand New APC Back-UPS PRO BR1500GI

This question was originally posted by Kevin Mychal on APC forums on 2/5/2012

I just bought a Brand New BR1500GI and when I plugged it in the outlet there was a buzzing noise when it is self-testing and when on battery-mode. Right now it is still charging the battery because it doesn't have any charge when I turned the unit ON for the first time.

Is this buzzing noise normal? Will it ever go away?

Also, does the package really not include the power adapter from the UPS to the Outlet? It only includes 2 cables that can be used from the UPS to the devices (loads).

Please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply barryware.

So in essence, the surge protection on those battery-protected outlets are only active when the unit is turned ON?

How loud is this buzzing? I would say its likely not normal depending on how loud it is. A loud buzzing is of course not normal. I would recommend checking the voltage etc showing on the display, check for faults(will say something like F06). Let me know if you see anything like that. Unfortunately, it appears this unit doesn't come with an input power cord. What kind of cable are you using if the unit didn't come with one?

Well, it's not that super looud but it is noticeable. I've tried comparing with the lower wattage (500W) APC UPS units we have in the office and they also buzz but mine (BR1500GI) produces a louder buzz, maybe because the battery of this unit has a bigger capacity. Oh and btw, I have two units of Brand New BR1500GI and they do the same buzz on battery problem.

Regarding their batteries, I think these units were manufactured August 2010 and then were stored and sold just this December 2011 to me. They are brand new and sealed. Does that greatly affect the capacity of the battery? Is it OK to contact APC for battery replacement in order to make sure?

Another question is: do the battery protected outlets with surge protection protect the devices plugged into them from surge even though the UPS is off?

And do I need to pre-charge the batteries of UPS when used for the first time? If so, how long would that be?

Thanks.

We don't recommend storing batteries for more than 6 months. Batteries in our warehouses are charged periodically to avoid any issues but I can't speak for others who sell our batteries. Only the surge protection outlets will work with the UPS off(with the unit plugged in). Also, these batteries do need to charge for up to 24 hours, though that does not mean they will not function until then. It just means they may not be 100 % charge initially.

Thanks for your answer. A couple of questions more:

1.) But if the UPS is off, the battery outlets are still protected from surge, right?

2.) Do you mean that the batteries don't need pre-conditioning before using them? What does recalibration do?

But if the UPS is off, the battery outlets are still protected from surge, right?

I'm not Chris but if the UPS is off, there is no output from the plugs on the back of the unit battery powered or not. They are disconnected from line in so that would indicate that if a surge happened on the supply side, it will not make it to the load side.

Not sure how far a lightning bolt that hits the supply side can jump though.
