Back UPS Pro 650 Problem

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/23/2009

Hi,

I have had this UPS for about 8-9 years now. I have had no problems with it, and I only had to replace the battery once about 3 years ago. Now every time there's a severe brownout or blackout (very rare), the UPS tries to switch to battery power. And when that happens, the UPS cuts the power from the PC and a continuous sound signal is emitted, and the red "overloaded" lamp turns on.

I tried unplugging everything, tried a different wall outlet (who knows?), to no avail. What I don't understand is why would the "overloaded" lamp turn on only when battery power is needed?

Any help is appreciated.

The Trade up is not available here, I just checked.

Thank you for the help. When I came here I thought it's just a forum, didn't know it's the official APC forum. Great support, customers don't forget that. 🙂

Glottis,

Just to clarify...it sounds like the UPS is emitting a single, constant tone with the overload LED on when the unit transfers to battery, and it does this with no load at all (you said everything was unplugged during your test)? Is the overload LED blinking or solid? Are there any other LEDs on in addition to the overload LED?

Also, what is/was your load attached to the UPS?

Please advise, as this could be an indication of an internal fault.

Thanks for replying, Erasmus.

Yes the UPS emits a single, constant tone with the overload LED on when the unit transfers to battery. It does that with no load at all. The overload LED is solid. None of the other LEDs are on.

The load is a single PC (Athlon64 3200+, ATI Radeon x1900xt, one 500GB hdd), with the monitor plugged in the "surge protection only" outlet.

I just found an APC Back-UPS Pro manual online which states the following: "The UPS tests
for overloads when operating on-battery and when performing self-tests"

When I initiate a self-test, the same thing happens as above. The Replace Battery LED is off all the time, so I don't think it's because of the battery.

This seems to be an internal UPS fault then. I would recommend trading-UP the UPS at our website (www.apc.com) or by calling our sales department (1-800-800-4272). This will give you a small discount on a new UPS, which is what I would recommend shooting for. The current sensor on the UPS could be faulty or there could be a general logic/board fault within the UPS, and there is no way to fix the issue unfortunately.

Bad news of course, but at least now I know (approximately) what's wrong.
As for trading up, I guess I'm out of luck if I live in Eastern Europe?

I think I'm going to buy a Back-UPS ES 700VA. I already have one (another PC) and it's good enough for home PCs.

Thanks for your time Erasmus.

I would check the APC page for your country (drop down at top of website) to determine trade-UPS options. We do have a large division for Europe so I don't think you'll be out of luck.

No problem.
