I just purchased a new computer with this battery backup unit. I connected the unit (followed the instructions to a tee). Everything was going smooth until I went to install the software and that is when I received the error "The installer is unable to locate a supported APC battery backup connected to your computer. check USB connections and try again." I went through and reconnected everything, checked the usb port, that is fine. I'm just not sure what is wrong.
New Computer
Windows XP SP3

with the UPS turned on and connected via USB, can you see if you see anything listed in the device manager in the control panel? lets see if you see an APC Battery Back UPS or even an unknown device in there. let us know what you see.
if you see an unknown device, you'd want to right click on that in device manager and choose Uninstall. after doing that you could disconnect/reconnect the USB cable and see if the UPS installs correctly. if it installs as an unknown device again, you could try another computer if you are able to or just another USB port on the computer and repeat the same procedure.
these two articles may have a couple of useful tips as well:
