Back-UPS HS 500 - Battery is impssible to attach!

This question was originally posted by Colin on APC forums on 10/6/2010

I've been working with various models of Back-UPS and SmartUPS for years, but this Back-UPS HS 500 is about to get a sledgehammer taken to it. If anyone has tried to attach the battery and then slide it back in you might know why I'm saying this. The white plastic cable-guard that's to the right of the battery (cable guard housing your red and balck wires) simply fits (in theory) into a little hole inside the unit. Visually it looks very simple, but no matter what I do I cannot get this thing slid in. I'm considering clipping the ends of the plastic off because frankly I"m about to destroy this unit otherwise.

Anyone experience this or am I just having some bad luck here?

It was a challenge and my thumb is rather sore today but it finally went it. It's that little bump in the center at the end of the cable guard that has to line up perfectly for the thing to slide in at all. My opinion is that this is an unnecessary design as the battery will stay in the unit once the top is secured anyway.

I can only imagine that I'll probably just replace the whole UPS rather than just the battery if ever the battery goes bad.

Thanks for reading. No sledgehammer necessary 🙂
