I have the Back-UPS ES 700
A MacPro computer(intel) running OS X
I have downloaded the latest PowerChute driver for OS X.
Now, my issues:
I try to configure my UPS to shut down the computer after it has been on battery power for 2 minutes.
Nothing happens.
Likewise, i also have tried to configure it with the second option, but it seems like there is no respons from the UPS when i excpect it to be..
Is ths a bug in software/firmware?
BTW: The power indicator shows that the computer runs on battery when i disconnect the UPS from power.

That is strange. I use PowerChute on OSX 10.4.10, and it does fine. Honestly, For Mac, I like the Native support better anyway. It seems to have more options.

Sonowand,
Can you confirm the version of OSX you are running as well as the version of Powerchute installed on the computer, also confirm the exact model and serial number of the UPS you are using. Approximately how long are you waiting for the shutdown to occur when using the UPS on battery for 2 minutes to shutdown?

The latest version of PowerChute Personal Edition for Mac OSX is version 1.3.4, and is available for download here:
http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCPE134
On your next shutdown test, could you wait a little bit longer? Maybe give it 1 - 2 minutes to see if the shutdown process starts. I wouldn't normally expect it to take this long, but I would be curious to hear if its not shutting down at all, or if the shutdown is being delayed by something.
If you are still seeing the same behavior with version 1.3.4, please uninstall the software, and try the native UPS support in the OSX operating sytem. Its in the Energy Saver menu in System Preferences.

I agree with the suggestion of dirtfoot. The issue is most likely related to the older revision of software you are running. If you are still experiencing difficulties after the upgrade, let us know.

thanks for the help guys,
im sorry to say it was a typo in my last message, of course i use the powerchute version 1.3.4.
However, i did uninstall it and used the native OSX UPS support, this worked out fine.
can now set the attributes i need to control the UPS.
I guess this indicates that there is some issues regarding the PowerChute driver and OSX.
Thank you very much.

The batteries will slowly discharge if the UPS is not plugged into AC power. If left long enough, the batteries inside the UPS may have their useful life cut short. If the UPS is only disconnected form AC power for a day or two, I wouldn't worry so much about it, but if you are leaving it unplugged for weeks or months there may be a problem. Ideally, the UPS would stay plugged into AC power at all times.

I agree with you on this. Its a shame that the Mac driver is so ripped for choices and attributes compared to Windows.
But the native system seems to work fine.
Regarding the battery discharge, is this a common problem for all types of UPS technologies or just the back UPS ES series?
Thanks guys

I can't find anything PCPE for Mac OS X offers that the built-in native UPS support doesn't already have. All one has to do is plug in their USB enabled APC UPS and Mac OS X 10.3.7 or better will recognize it and enable a UPS power scheme option in the Energy Saver System Preference Pane.
I also echo the sentiment about the unfortunate state of PowerChute Personal Edition on the Mac. Are there any specific reasons why Windows can gather and process the level of detail in PCPE 2.0 but a Mac cannot?
APC owes it to their customers who choose to use a Mac to provide at least some level of feature parity.

Hi,
I am also experiencing the same problems regarding shutdown after power failure with powerchute 1.3.4.
The energy saver does work with timed shutdowns, but I don't want the notification it gives when the power fails. I would much prefer the system to shut itself down without telling the user.
Can anyone tell me if the powerchute 1.3.4 does this?
If not, are there any known ways to disable the notification in energy saver?
Thanks
