I have a apc smart ups 1000. I got a AP9617 from a friend who said they did a bad flash of it.
I read http://forums.isxusergroups.com/thread.jspa?messageID=18717
I brain-deaded the smart ups 1000.
I inserted the card.
I tried to talk via the serial line with hyperterminal.
I got no response whatsoever from hypteterminal.
I had the baud rate, start and stop bits set correctly.
I am using a 940-0024C cable which I know is good because I was able to run
the apc power chute business edition (the web based one) before I inserted the AP9617,
and I could communicate with the ups.
I disabled the apc service before starting hyperterminal.
I also tried the reset button on the AP9617, and pressed it for several seconds.
Is there any way to recover the AP9617 card?

can you confirm the port settings in hyperterminal you're using? also, what are the status and link LEDs look like on the card itself when it is inside of the UPS?

Both led's are on, yellow and green, not blinking.
As for hyperterminal, it is COM1 port settings: 2400, 8, none, 1, none

Link is yellow.
Status is green.
I do have other com ports, however power chute is working with com1 and that is the com port
that I have the serial cable plugged into.
I will brain dead the unit, and see if I can use hyperterminal now.

I typed shift-y and got SM as a response.
I plugged in the ap9617, and pressed lots of enters.
I got a few NA, and then nothing at all.
No replied at all.
The yellow and green led are on, no blinking.
Is there any way to re-flash the card?

ok so we know your serial connection is working correctly. upon doing a shift Y, and receiving an SM response, i would install the card to the UPS, wait for it to power up and after a minute or two, slide the AP9617 and keep pressing enter after waiting for it to power up completely. if you don't get anything, after doing that, the card may not be recoverable even though it displays good LED indicators 😞

sorry! i think I mis-typed.
create a terminal session with the UPS and make sure that you get an SM response from Shift Y. after seeing that, slide in the AP9617 NMC while the UPS is still on. start pressing enter continuously immediately after putting the NMC inside of the UPS. watch the status LED on it to make sure it starts flashing rapidly, alternating between yellow and green. after that stops and the status LED stays solid green or whatever its doing,
if you get any prompts at any point, try to login. if not, then I'd have to say there is an issue here with the card. you COULD try a different UPS incase its a flaky communication problem but I am not so sure that will work - worth a shot though i guess.

I have tried all the baud rates, 2400, 9600, 19.2 and 38.4
I hit enter a bunch of times.
Nothing at all.
Is the unit 100% trash?
Would there be any point to removing the button cell battery?
Is there no way to recover from a bad flash?
thanks

the only thing actually that just came to mind is to make sure you try different baud rates. the UPS communicates at 2400 but someone may have changed the baud rate on the management card itself.
try 9600, 19200, and 38400, keeping the rest of the settings the same and see if you get anything after tapping enter a bunch of times at each speed.
this info/instructions are listed here about the baud rates.

on this particular card, you have gone through all of the tips/tricks i can think of to try and recover the firmware on the card. there may be something else going on here other than a bad flash. the coin cell battery keeps the date on the time on the card and thats it so its up to you what you want to do with it.
i cant think of anything else to do here if the card isnt working besides getting a new one 😕

When I type shift y, I get a response of SM
When I type shift a, I get a beep, and a response of OK
I can't easily see the leds right now.
When I hit return, I get a reply of NA

Please clarify.
