Just got an SMT1000, and liking everything except the fan noise. I came across the thread here that suggested calling APC for a firmware fix, which I've gotten. At any rate, the documentation says it requires an RJ45 to DB9 cable (Part #940-1525A), which I don't have. Has anyone done this with the USB port on there, or using a RJ45 to USB cable (which I have from another APC unit, a Back-UPS 750VA)?
Much appreciated!
Updated: Firmware fix applied using a USB to Serial adapter from Keyspan. Fan has been quiet since, turning on when on battery power.

I can confirm that it does work when using a USB to Serial adapter. I used a Keyspan USA-19HS adapter on Windows 7 32-bit without issue. Firmware has been updated; I'll have to see how the fan acts now.

I just used the 940-1525A cable and a proalific usb serial adapter and a off brand one and it wouldn't work i had to dig out a old computer with a serial port. I also had to figure it out on my own from this page http://www.schneider-electric.us/sites/us/en/support/faq/faq_main.page?page=content&country=ITB〈=en&id=FA164737&locale=en_US&redirect=true I called tech support and they tried to have me do it with the network management card and even told me the wrong firmware file to use and then told me it can't be dated.... and i should trade them in for a new one! i have two that were build november 2009 with firmware 2.0 In there instructions it even says the smt 1000 va or less can't be done with the management card but they had me try any way because it wouldn't work with the firmware wizard. The tech support used to be real real good here i know from past experience with them over the last 15 years. Now they just want you to trade it in for new when there is nothing wrong with it and they just don't know what they are doing! I figured it out after messing with it for a day and there is no fan noise unless the power goes out! One last thing they also had me try using the usb cable that also didn't work!
