Immediate Alarm Condition - SUA1500RM2U - Any other tests to run?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/29/2011

SUA1500RM2U - UPS

Status:
UPS Chassis Fans: OK
UPS Chassis Breaker: Not Tripped
NO Devices Plugged into Load Receptacles
Device Age: Unknown (but probably atleast 5+ years old)

Symptoms:
Alarm begins to sound immediately when conected to AC power - even before UPS is powered on! (UPS is off with no lights and no loads connected)

When Powered on:
Battery display is fully green.
Sine wave light is Green
Alarm is still sounding

Depress and Hold Test Button:
A/C On light is Yellow
Sine wave light is FLASHING Green
Alarm is still sounding

Battery pack has been replaced with battery pack that is less than 30 days old - No change in symptoms / error conditions.
UPS placed on different AC Circuit - No change in symptoms / error conditions.

Any other diagnostic tests to run or is time to have this unit repaired by APC?
Thanks!
Ken

It is very possible that with all the correct, normal LED indications, your UPS has a broken buzzer which is always ON. The UPS is otherwise working properly.

Thanks for everyone's replies!

As an 'un-scientific' test, I took a small digital clock radio and plugged it in as a load.
Connected the batteries and plugged in the AC.
When I turned on the UPS, the alarm sounded immediately.
The clock radio display did begin flashing the normal '12:00' to have its time set. Alarm was still sounding.
I then left the AC on, but disconected the batteries. The clock remained illuminated, so it was still getting (some?) power. Alarm was still sounding.
I then reconnected the batteries and then disconnected the AC. The clock remained illuminated, so it was still getting (some?) power. Alarm was still sounding.
I then reconnected the AC. The clock remained illuminated, so it was still getting (some?) power. Alarm was still sounding.

I will not be able to bring in my digital volt meter to see whether the UPS is actually delivering 120VAC to the load, but if not, it was delivering enough to keep the old clock radio happy.

So, I don't yet really know what's causing the alarm, but the rest of the UPS may be operating normally.

I'm open to any addition thoughts / tests that might provide additional information.
Thanks!
Ken

Good day Ken,

Is it a continuous tone or beep, what's the alarm pattern that the UPS emits? Can you also check if the UPS provides power/voltage on the output receptacles please. Let's see if this would change anything, turn the UPS off and unplug it from the input source. Press and hold the O/Off button, you'll need to release the button once you hear a click.

After doing the step above, attempt to plug in and turn the UPS on. Let us know the outcome, can you also post the serial number of the UPS? You can post the first six characters of it, it would let us know what year it was manufactured and if it is still within warranty.
