We have an APC Symmetra 80KVA UPS and an IBM iSeries. We are looking to connect the iSeries to the Symmetra. The problem we are faced with is that the iSeries and the Symmetra are located in a different room, approx. 50-75 feet away from each other. What is the best method for connecting these two pieces of hardware, as I believe 50 feet is well over the limit of an RS-232 Serial Cable.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards,
Steve

You can get that distance using CAT5 to carry the RS232 cable according to [http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/info/RS-232_specs.html]. Actually, since it uses 2400 baud, an extension RS232 cable could work as well.
However, check your Symmetra for an ethernet port. It probably has a network management card that you can use for shutdowns over the network.
