I have a need to install one of my SMT-1000s on its side while in operation. I understand that there is need to keep the ventilation holes on both sides of the case free and clear of obstruction and will do that via the installation of adequately tall rubber feet on the side of the unit.
Is there any issue with running the UPS on its side, aside from insuring adequate airflow, and, if so, what could be the issue? Also, I am assuming the airflow is from right to left when looking at the front of the UPS but I will run the unit on battery at load to make sure that assumption is correct.
Thanks for your thoughts!

The only SMT Series UPS system designed to be installed vertically & horizontally is the RM2U.
The RM1U can only be installed horizontal with the supplied rail kit. People have used wall mounted racks to suspend the same unit (vertically flush) against a wall in some edge case needs. 🤦‍♂️
The box style SMT UPS is designed solely to sit upright given the venting holes for cooling. The biggest concern is the very heavy internal transformer as early versions of this model had poor internal support.
Laying the unit on its side risks the transformer breaking off the main board.
Ignoring all the above for now all the systems need to be mounted in the correct orientation. Must be shielded from direct sunlight, heat generated sources, adequate spacing for air flow, and operated in a conditioned space.
